önf - What No Number Counts On

Every morning numbers set out to work in our heads, bringing order into our lives. We sit down to breakfast at a table with four legs, school begins at eight, in the afternoon we dial the phone numbers of our friends, in the supermarket we compare prices, and the friendly voice at the railway station announces at what time and from which platform the train will take us on our holidays. Without numbers, our world would descend into chaos. But what would happen if suddenly a numerical stranger entered our lives?

The numbers 1 to 0 live in perfect harmony in their apartment. They have their little peculiarities, but they get on well with one another. Together they can come up with everything humans need from them. They can even line up to play at forming millions and billions. But one day önf arrives on the scene and insists that she is also a number. They hadn’t expected anything like this. No-one could ever expect anything like this. But what do you do when it happens? What do you do if suddenly one morning önf slips into people’s minds? Maybe she is actually the perfect number for everything that feels like a number but is somehow önfish. The other numbers lose their heads completely and there is an almighty row. But then, gradually, they begin to get used to the newcomer, and even to accept her as one of their own.

In this play Katja Hensel shows us in a humorous way how important numbers are to us in our modern life, but she also asks her characters the simple question: what would they expect and accept in their lives? Perhaps the range of possibilities open to social life quite simply verges on the infinite.
