Grandpa Otto has to go into an old people’s home. That’s what his family has decided because Otto has dementia. As his daily life comes apart at the seams, the past takes hold of him more and more. His grandchildren, Sophie and Julian, have - rather reluctantly - taken on the task of preparing their grandpa for the move and clearing out his flat. They are already picturing what they could do with the flat - as a flat-share or a rehearsal room. But Grandpa Otto refuses to play along and stubbornly defends his way of life and his home by repeatedly unpacking everything his grandchildren have just packed. As he oscillates uncontrollably between the past and the present, boundaries grow indistinct and Otto becomes very anxious. Sophie and Julian at first find it difficult to cope, but then at last stop their quarrelling and begin to listen to their grandpa’s story. Otto tells them about Hannah, the love of his life, and how he wasn’t able to save her from being murdered in a concentration camp. The grandchildren get to know a completely new side to their grandfather, as well as discovering that the past can tell them a lot about their own life today. Within this fragile connectedness, Otto, Sophie and Julian change and ultimately find themselves sharing an unexpected future.

This is a profound and humorous play about remembering and forgetting, past and present, young and old.
