Call Me Pip
2 m + 1 f (with doubling), age 8+, premiered at the JUP - Junges Theater im Pferdestall, Stadttheater Bremerhaven, 14.06.2012 (directed by Lee Beagley)
Captain Ahab hunted for Moby Dick, the white whale, with such obsessive passion that it was no longer clear who was hunting whom. He was ready to sacrifice everything to attain his goal - his ship, his crew and himself. He lost all sense of proportion, all human feeling, and all sense of pity. He drove his young cabin boy Pip mad and finally, in one last great battle, took his ship the Pequod with him to death and destruction.
150 years later, a businessman meets two strange figures on the beach: Min Jong, the Pequod's cook, and his sweetheart Crazy Jane, who have been waiting there for him year after year. They tell him a tale of adventure, courage, passion and macho men. He is fascinated and agrees to sign on and go to sea in search of the whale and happiness. But the hunt soon turns to greed - for riches and swift success. The water turns red with the blood of whales and of men who have lost their lives, because the business of exploiting humans and Nature is a very dirty one. Crazy Jane and Min Jong involve this modern man in an old tale of selfishness and violence that could not be more up to date. Under a crazed captain in a crazy world, it seems almost as if mad little Pip was the only one who understood the truth.
